The Sphinx

Carrying on the theme from yesterday, this is another less busy photograph from the same day.  This time Fred has put on his pith helmet and all the others have taken theirs off.  The folding camera is still in his hand, in the background two nomads are exiting stage right and the dry desert heat still burns off the page, the khaki uniforms seemingly particularly unsuited for the climate. Modern photographs show the Sphinx head-dress to be almost smooth whilst there are distinct grooves in this picture from 1917, the consequence of time passing for nearly 100 years and countless sandstorms.

There are six airmen in each photograph but are they all the same or is one missing from each, behind the camera?  I keep looking and cannot be sure – opinions welcome.

The Life Book Gallery at www.windbacktime.com includes more images from Fred’s varied and exciting life.
