Travel theme: Sculpture

As the name suggests, the Royal Cast Collection in Copenhagen does not display original sculptures but plaster casts of statues and reliefs from around the world.  The work on display ranges from the traditional to the seriously weird.  It is a sizable and wide ranging collection occupying several floors in a converted waterfront warehouse at Vestindisk Pakhus, Toldbodgade.  On the day we visited we had the museum and its vast collection virtually to ourselves; ironically just along from the museum, the solitary figure of The Little Mermaid was surrounded by camera-wielding Japanese tourists and Europeans gorging on burgers, oblivious to her charms (there is a picture here).

Baltic Gallery – now online

I have finally finished ‘tarting up’ the Baltic pictures.  They can all be seen at the original northumbrian : light gallery site.  There has been much mucking about in Photoshop so nothing appears quite as it should be.  The camera always lies.  For those easily bored or of a nervous disposition, be warned that there are 87 pictures – with a six second autoplay loop this is going to take nine minutes out of your life.

 

Copenhagen : brief impressions

Another clear clean bright cityscape, it is almost a relief to realise that the Nordic countries can do serious tat as well.  I arrived about fifty years too late appreciate the gaudy charms of Tivoli Gardens; Blackpool Pleasure Beach with a few trees and grass.

The mermaid still sits serene upon the water whilst Japanese tourists gather to catch time and Europeans gorge on burgers, oblivious to the lady’s charms.

Facing onto the waterfront in a converted warehouse is the Royal Cast Museum, the city’s highlight.  A wonderful mix of the classical and seriously weird.
