… credit where it is due, Nikon have finally done the decent thing. Earlier this week I took delivery of a brand new Nikon D610 to replace the three year old, and seriously flawed, D600. A few days later the invoice arrived – total cost £0. I am of course delighted and the last few nights I have been re-studying the many-paged manual in earnest. Not that there is any difference between the two models (at least none that I can remember) but I had grown seriously disaffected with the camera and the brand. Sitting on the shelf, the subtleties of its dials, buttons and menus are soon forgotten.
It remains to be seen just how much I will use it. The Fuji X100s is still my weapon of choice not just because it is small, easy to carry about, beautifully retro and produces such wonderful results but because it is so intuitive – yes, it too comes with a many-paged manual but I rarely look at it. The dials are entirely consistent with a ‘proper’ camera and the menus easy to navigate, which prompts the question, will I be able to resist the rumoured 24MP X100F.
Enough of the hardware – the skies above Northumberland have been putting on a show this last week and here they are. The stills are captured with the Fuji and the videos with the even more diminutive GoPro Hero 4. The first two are time lapse recordings across the neighbouring fields and the last, a ten minute edited drive in the Elise from Hexham to Warkworth Golf Club (across country via Corbridge for fuel, Fenwick, Whalton and Morpeth):

I have the D610 and love it.. so glad I couldn’t afford it until they brought the update out or I would have had the D600 too..so many problems with it..
Very fortunate timing, the D600 saga has not served Nikon’s reputation well. The D610, the D600 as it should have been, must make for a great camera.
Interesting to read your thoughts on these cameras and I’m glad Nikon gave you an upgrade. I like the variety of seeing some videos in your post too. This is something I’m planning on doing myself, after treating myself to a Go Pro earlier in the year! More kit to charge and carry around!

I’ve been enjoying using the GoPro in situations where I couldn’t feasibly take my D810, e.g. cycling, kayaking etc. A gimbal may be a useful addition to the camera bag too!
And a drone after that 😉

Interesting I missed this – I also had a D600 for a while – definitely suffered excessive dust spots on the sensor, but I traded it in (after cleaning the sensor myself – successfully) and got a D800 with no such problems. Still using it for my landscape work. I also use a D750 for day to day property (because of the tilt screen) and with interchangeable batteries and lenses – I am a happy bunny – glad Nikon came through rewarding your persistence.
In the end it became a matter of principle – if like the Samsung Note, the D600 had been prone to catching fire, we would have heard more in the press ;-). In the end I am very pleased with the D610 – I am no longer paranoid about oil spots. The one good outcome was that I sought refuge in the Fuji X100s – a wonderful discovery which I might not have embarked on had the D600 been perfect from the outset.
