Weekly Photo Challenge: Let there be Light – the sequel
According to Wiki: The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is a pedestrian and cyclist tilt bridge spanning the River Tyne between Gateshead’s Quays arts quarter on the south bank, and the Quayside of Newcastle upon Tyne on the north bank. The award-winning structure was conceived and designed by architects Wilkinson Eyre and structural engineers Gifford. The bridge is sometimes referred to as the ‘Blinking Eye Bridge’ or the ‘Winking Eye Bridge’ due to its shape and its tilting method. In terms of height, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge is slightly shorter than the neighbouring Tyne Bridge, and stands as the sixteenth tallest structure in the city.
This Let there be Light sequence was taken, handheld, with a Samsung SII smartphone, so less than ideal for the task. Watch and wait for the colours to change; in real life they do this on a much slower cycle – you get bored and very cold in November, standing, waiting and waiting for the next colour shift:
Elegant structure, it is.
It is a lovely bridge which deserves better than a few ‘snaps’ with a smartphone – just an excuse to play with the slideshow widget. Surprised you cannot change the display interval nor the transition style but then it isn’t PowerPoint 🙂
Ah, you have venture into slideshow widget territory. Brave soul! I have yet to attempt a simple gallery post.
Give it a go Julie, ’tis easy peasy – if I can do it etc 🙂
🙂 🙂
I spend a lot of time campaigning to protect heritage, but I love modern architecture too, and this bridge is wonderful. Life enhancing – smartphone snaps or otherwise.
The transformation of Newcastle quayside has been fantastic and this bridge in particular, Norman Foster’s Sage & the renovated Baltic are the stars of the show. When the bridge was first erected the local port authority insisted on a “Vessel Collision Protection System” (bollards to you and me) which were just an ugly distraction – thankfully they have now been removed regardless of the ‘elf and safety’ consequences (which were always zero 🙂 ).
Vessel collision protection system – lord! We have a truck collision protection system on our street. The b-things just get uprooted.
Lovely bridge! I was almost, almost there a few weeks ago … 🙂
It is, definitely worth the trip if you can make it another time.
I hope to go up to Scotland next year. Then I’ll see .. 🙂
HL=huge like, babe… 🙂 wow of the wow for the color shift, very professional, indeed! 🙂 I’ve realized once more how pitiful are my pix…

sunny hugs… Mélanie
Many thanks Mélanie – many years since I have been called a ‘babe’, quite made my day 🙂
my pleasure, pretty young lady… 🙂
Nice tilt!
Thanks – out of necessity – the only way to make it fit on the long thin smartphone aspect ratio….too idle to move 🙂
