In the days when work dominated our lives, summer was a time for holidays and ‘escape’. This invariably meant travelling to distant places in June and July, perversely, leaving Northumberland behind when at its best. In recent years this has been less of a problem, the rain falling incessantly, week after week, but this year has been different, we have stayed at home and sweet summer has arrived. The climate feels almost Tuscan with a gentle warm wind blowing from the west, a precursor to the arrival of heavy rains overnight. The mornings rise in a clear bright light shining through a rain washed sky – why would we want to be anywhere else:

Oddly enough, my parents always go to Northumbria every summer.

I’ve asked them a number of times why they don’t actually sell up and move there, seeing as they’re both retired. But my mum’s excuse is that she wouldn’t want to spoil it.
Probably sensible – the NE winters can be fairly harsh compared to the NW

This such a perfect image, Robin. Love the depth of view; the tracks through the grass are slightly mysterious, but in a good way – as if there’s something even more splendid waiting beyond the horizon. Everything is colluding to draw you to that place – the clouds, the trees. I do admire the narrative impulse that infuses your compositions.

Just back from a wonderful Northumbrian week filled with sunshine, clouds and rain only at night while we slept 🙂 its such a beautiful part of the world

We stayed in Wooler and travelled about, from top to bottom and east to west:-)
A nice part of the county and convenient for touring around. I love Wooler’s ‘mountain top’ golf course – something of a cardiac stress test :-). Glad the weather was kind, sounds the same pattern as further south.
I really like this. I recommend everyone to enlarge. Beautiful faces and figures in the clouds. 🙂
