There is a bitter iced wind blowing in off the lagoon. The temperature is hovering just above freezing but it feels much colder as the end November sun hides behind a blanket of cloud; in Piazza San Marco, Caffè Florian is doing a brisk trade but no one sits outside. At the fish market next to the Rialto Bridge everyone is wrapped in deep layers and nobody wants to lift the fresh iced fish from the counter; Venice is gripped in winter and no one is happy:

Love the expressions on the faces you have captured. They are so authentic.
And miserable 🙂
Excellent.
Thanks Brian
Wonderfully winter gripped faces.
Many thanks – winter gripped literally and metaphorically I suspect. This is the land of Daphne Du Maurier’s Don’t Look Now 😦
Love your subjects and the descriptive narrative. Excellent.
Thanks Debbie – the narrative was easy, I can still feel that icy wind coming in off the lagoon – good time to be in Venice though, much quieter than the summer months.
Excellently captured Northumbrian Light, great mini-series. MM
Thanks Mick
I can see the look of winter is upon their faces as they patiently wait for the next customers to buy the fresh iced fish so they can go home soon and sit next to the fire.
I still cannot imagine them with smiles on their faces though 🙂
Stunning photos, Robin. Am especially struck by the middle one, not only the look of pained forbearance on the woman’s face, but the ghostly view of Venice and boats in the background. All the more striking because we do not associate Venice with the biting cold.
Many thanks Tish. I find her a little disturbing – perhaps I am thinking of the face hidden by the hooded red coat (Don’t Look Now) 😦
Yes, that was one of the scariest films I’ve ever watched.
I don’t know how I missed this post. These photos are gorgeous…..the expressions on their faces and all the details are marvelous!
Many thanks Madelaine, much appreciated. They are a happy bunch aren’t they 🙂
For some reason I am not seeing all your posts in my reader Bah!! Brilliant shots 🙂
Many thanks Jo – UK WordPress users seem to be suffering from various gremlins at the moment
Yes I have noticed this! Hope they get it sorted! 🙂
