Travel theme: Sculpture

As the name suggests, the Royal Cast Collection in Copenhagen does not display original sculptures but plaster casts of statues and reliefs from around the world.  The work on display ranges from the traditional to the seriously weird.  It is a sizable and wide ranging collection occupying several floors in a converted waterfront warehouse at Vestindisk Pakhus, Toldbodgade.  On the day we visited we had the museum and its vast collection virtually to ourselves; ironically just along from the museum, the solitary figure of The Little Mermaid was surrounded by camera-wielding Japanese tourists and Europeans gorging on burgers, oblivious to her charms (there is a picture here).

This is is an example of the weird:The weird

….and this an example of the traditional:The traditional

“The Little Mermaid was surrounded by camera-wielding Japanese tourists and Europeans gorging on burgers…”

Makes a change from somebody trying to saw her head off.

🙂 Indeed it does – I had forgotten all about the little lady twice losing her head – thanks for the reminder

Looks interesting. I missed that place when I was in Copenhagen.

We very nearly walked by, I don’t remember there being any obvious signs just the cast of some naked chap in the window (wouldn’t normally tempt me in but Pam thought it looked interesting :-))…..and its free with no restrictions on photography.

    Excellent compositions.

Many thanks – the fact that the place was virtually empty helped enormously.
